Did you know that students lose about 60% of what they have learned during the school year over the summer?! It’s called the summer slide and teachers see the effects of this when students go back to school in the Fall. What teachers notice most is that students come into the new grade with poor focus, lacking grade-level skills, and low pre-assessments.
When school is out, we’ll need to find ways to get our kids through summer and keep the learning going! Due to Covid-19, children may have lost some learning so we will need to do our best to avoid going down the summer slide even further. Here are three suggested learning sites to avoid the summer slide altogether.
ReadingIQ
The one thing that a child can do over the summer to make the biggest impact and avoid the summer slide is read, read, read all summer, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. The more you read, the more you know, and the more you know, the more you grow. ReadingIQ is a complete digital library for ages 2-12 that features a wide variety of genres and book titles to engage all children, including Disney Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic, Star Wars, and MORE.
Taken directly from its site, ReadingIQ includes:

It offers books for:
- Prereaders (under age 2)
- Emerging Readers (ages 2-4)
- Growing Readers (ages 5-8)
- Independent Readers ages 9-12
- Spanish Readers (ages 2-12)
Types of books included are:
- Picture Books

- Wordless Stories
- Informational Books Earth & Space Science

- Jokes & Riddles
- Rhymes & Songs
It’s important that children are exposed to different levels and genres of books. Children should read what they love and they should also read to learn. Reading aloud to children, as well as children reading out loud to others, is important too. So get those kiddos reading for at least 30 minutes a day! I share recommended books in this post, Get Your Summer Read On, and offer Summer Reading Brochures for elementary students.
What’s The Cost?
When I signed up at ReadingIQ I paid $29.99 for the year, which is only $2.50 per month. It’s well worth it for the selection of books at your fingertips.

My 9-year-old, who thinks he’s a video gamer, actually loves this virtual universe.
Here’s a little bit more about Adventure Academy taken directly from their site:
Recently, Age of Learning, Inc., has introduced Adventure Academy. Adventure Academy is a massively multiplayer online game for elementary and middle school-aged children 8-13 featuring thousands of learning activities in a fun and safe virtual world and brings learning to life as it builds critical knowledge of essential curriculum topics in language arts, math, science, social studies, and more: essentially picking up where ABCmouse left off.

So, if you LOVE ABCmouse but your kids outgrew it, then Adventure Academy is the next best step for virtual learning that is engaging and FUN! And the fact that it is a multiplayer online game, it is perfect for your upper elementary and middle school kids, especially if they love to play video games. Teacher-mom win!
Adventure Academy includes these key features (from the Age of Learning Blog):

This is definitely a resource that every family with kids needs. Thanks to the pandemic, the slide is going to be even worse than usual. These will be a big help.
