Halloween Writing Prompts: Write a Spooky Story

This is a fun, low prep, print and go, Halloween writing activity. Each writing prompt encourages students to write a spooky story and to use as many of the words as they can in their story. Giving students a word bank sparks ideas and creativity for their story, while also giving support. The writing is meant to be fun and creative.

This resource includes 10 spooky story prompts in both black and white and color.

Write a spooky story about a:

• bat
• witch
• vampire
• Jack-o-lantern
• owl
• black cat
• werewolf
• mummy
• ghost
• haunted house

You can use these writing prompts in a few ways:

• You can put these writing prompts in your writing center for the month of October. Students write their spooky story or multiple stories throughout the month.
• Write short spooky stories: Teach the elements of a story (beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, plot, dialogue, etc., and take their stories through the writing process all the way to publishing. Turn out the lights, put on some spooky background music, and tell the spooky stories in class. They love this!
• After writing, create a spooktacular bulletin board display. Print each writing prompt front to back (long edge). Students can cut out the shape of the prompt to eliminate the words around it. Students color the black and white templates (printer-friendly), or you can print these out in vibrant color (If you dare!) to create an eye-popping display. Either way, this will come out spooktacular.
• Do a quick write on Halloween—students love this! It’s spontaneous, silly, and fun! Our favorite!
