Note Taking Cards- Active Listening

Do your students have trouble actively listening? Active Listening is a challenging skill for many students. Teaching, modeling, and guided practice with active listening will promote listening, engagement, and participation in your classroom when someone is speaking, whether it be a teacher, student, presenter, etc.

Have your students start off with practicing Active Listening by recording thoughtful questions and comments. Note-taking often eliminates student distractions as they are focused on the speaker and the note-taking task at hand, plus they have their questions and comments prepared when the speaker is ready.

Then, teach and model how to practice Active Listening with these skills: restate, summarize, reflect, asking questions, and making connections to the speaker. Teach, model and practice these skills individually before giving students the note-taking card with all the skills where they’ll choose ONE skill to focus on while listening.

You could teach, model, and do guided practice with Active Listening during these classroom activities:

During a lesson
While watching a video
When someone is presenting (presenter, teacher, student, parent, etc.)
When a student is sharing their work
During a read-aloud
While students are peer coaching
Listening to a podcast
