Be a Better Writer, a must read for anyone who wants to be a better writer, in its 2nd edition, offers the writer real tips, practical techniques, relevant activities, useful checklists and essential writing samples to teach the writer, not the writing.
Be a Better Writer, is a resource for teens, adults, aspiring writers and anyone who just wants to be a better writer. This is a book for all teachers providing strategies and tools applicable to primary grades as well. Peha begins with, “You don’t have to read this whole book. Focus on the techniques that matters most to you.” With this non intimating format the writer is in charge of choosing what makes them a better writer. Choice allows the writer to try out Peha’s techniques while building confidence and adding effective strategies to their bag of writing tricks.
Peha offers strategies that writers could use to solve problems. When writers have no choice about the subject his technique, Topic Equation strategy, is sure to get writers writing about what matters most when their interest combined with the subject generates into a topic the writer is passionate about. Struggling with details? Peha offers a variety of useful ways to organize details with strategies, like Think, Feel, Do, Tell- Show and Ideas-Details. All the while Margot Carmichael Lester offers tips bringing the reader into the reality of being a writer.
“I use the Ideas-Details strategy when I need to check off an idea-as in, “Do I have enough information to support this thought?- or when I need to write something short, like a blog post, where I have to pick the best details to create the most impact in the fewest numbers of words. It’s also helpful when many ideas compete for inclusion. If I have an Ideas Details-Chart for each one, it’s easier to pick the most relevant information” (Peha p. 76).
Once again, Mr. Peha is working his writing magic and does not disappoint readers with his delivery and style. And its dedications says it all, “dedicated to writers, parents, teachers and anyone who values writing.” If any of these things matter to you, then this book will be sure to make you a better writer.
