As a teacher and a mom, working remotely from home for distance learning is a challenge. I not only have my 4th-grade elementary class to manage but my own third grader’s schoolwork and a 3-year-old running rampant. Now, if you know or have a 3-year-old, you know what I mean. A 3-year-old or a “threenager” as I call them, has their own voice and their own agenda All. DAY. LONG. I was so worried that he was not learning enough or getting enough attention at home after the learning center he attended had closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I just couldn’t give him what he needed during the workday as I tried to juggle my work and my older son’s work. I was feeling mom guilt and exhausted. So instead of printing out worksheets and drilling the ABC’s and 123’s every spare minute I had, I decided to sign up for a learning program that I used with my older son in the past: ABCmouse.com!
If you haven’t used or heard of ABCmouse, let me tell you a little bit about it since I have used it both past and present. ABCmouse Early Learning Academy is a complete online curriculum program for children ages 2-8.
Taken directly from their site, ABCmouse includes:

I don’t just love ABCmouse.com because it includes all of this. I love ABCmouse.com because my 3-year-old loves it. He actually asks to go on ABCmouse. He’s not the type of kid who is really into letters and numbers. Sometimes I think he could care less. But he does show much more interest and progress after using this program daily for about 15-30 minutes each day. I was not looking for a babysitter or putting my child in front of a screen all day. I was looking for a meaningful and effective way in which we can interact together on a learning platform that made it easy for him to learn.
What this 3-year-old loves:
• Coloring Pages- there are so many coloring pages to choose from: shapes, colors, letters, numbers, and animals. He loves to “paint” and is creative with using different shades of colors.
• Pet Park- At the park, he takes care of his Kitty. He can feed him, wash him, and play with him. There are also learning activities that tie into this as well, like a puzzle, game, or book.
• Pet Store- This allows him to buy fish for his very own aquarium. He bought the tank, corals, rocks, and the tropical fish with the tickets that he has earned from completing each activity.
• Zoo- We can explore the different animal exhibits, as if in real-time, and learn animal facts about each one. We love the flamingos and the monkeys!
• Games- He loves to pop the letter, number, or color balloons or bubbles. There is such a variety of games to choose from on so many different levels.
• Music Videos- There is such a variety of music videos that teach different concepts from letter sounds, colors, and number patterns. There are familiar ones like The Ants Go Marching and The Wheels on the Bus.
• ABCmouse TV series- This series covers topics like The Golden Gate Bridge, The Great Wall of China, and The Statue of Liberty. My little learner watches this series over and over.
What this Teacher Mom Loves:
- Incentives- Children earn 3 tickets for each activity they complete, which is basically everything they do. Tickets can be cashed in for all kinds of items that they wish to purchase like stuff for their room and/or their aquarium.
- Learning Path- I like how the learning path guides children through a series of specific lessons. Children receive prizes along the way.
- Fine Motor Skills & Hand-Eye Coordination- Learning how to use a mouse takes a lot of control and practice. Sometimes the tracing activities are even hard for me to do with the mouse. If you have a touch screen monitor, popping the bubbles and balloons is a lot of fun and strengthens hand-eye coordination.
- Independence: Children gain more independence by doing the activities that they know and love and gain the confidence to explore new activities on their own.
- The Variety: There is so much for children to do and explore in all academic subjects: the library, puzzles, music videos, coloring, and so much more.
One thing that ABCmouse.com shares in its introduction video is that it’s okay for children to repeat activities that they know and love. The whole idea is to let them explore, work, and learn with some independence. So, it’s okay if your child wants to only do the coloring pages or the games. They’ll move on to other activities when they are ready.
If you’re a teacher and/or a mom who is working from home with young children ages 2-8, I strongly recommend ABCmouse. It will engage your child in learning, get them ready for school, fill in any gaps they might have, and provides opportunities for more learning and growth. I am amazed at the progress I already see with my own child.
