I came across Adventure Academy in the summer of 2019. Actually, my eight-and-a-half-year-old came across it while watching T.V. The commercial caught his attention due to the interactive look and feel along with having that “video game” appeal. Now having an eight-and a half-year-old boy home in the summer isn’t easy. He is very social, and active, and loves the video game scene. This teacher-mom does not care as much for video games, which is why I am always looking for an alternative way to encourage and motivate some kind of learning over the summer. Adventure Academy is just what I was looking for to revisit and learn new concepts, help fill in some of the learning gaps, and ensure readiness for the fall.
What is Adventure Academy?
First, let me tell you more about Adventure Academy. At the time, I had no idea that Adventure Academy was affiliated with ABCmouse Learning Academy. Now if you read my post, ABCmouse to the Rescue: An Online Early Childhood Curriculum then you know how much my 3-year-old and I love this educational program. It rescued me when I was teaching remotely and was juggling my third grader’s schoolwork and a preschooler running rampant. ABCmouse is an online early childhood curriculum with a ton of educational and interactive games and activities specifically for ages 2-8 while Adventure Academy is a virtual universe with thousands of educational activities for bigger kids ages 8-13.
Taken directly from their site:
Recently, Age of Learning, Inc., has introduced Adventure Academy. Adventure Academy is a massively multiplayer online game for elementary and middle school-aged children 8-13 featuring thousands of learning activities in a fun and safe virtual world and brings learning to life as it builds critical knowledge of essential curriculum topics in language arts, math, science, social studies, and more: essentially picking up where ABCmouse left off.
Yes! There it is…. essentially picking up where ABCmouse left off. So, if you LOVE ABCmouse but your kids outgrew it, then Adventure Academy is the next best step for virtual learning that is engaging and FUN! And the fact that it is a multiplayer online game, it is perfect for your upper elementary and middle school kids, especially if they love to play video games. Teacher-mom win!
Adventure Academy includes these key features (from the Age of Learning Blog):
- Thousands of learning activities across hundreds of topics, including curriculum-based games, books, a wide range of other types of reading materials, educational videos, and additional interactive experiences addressing all major academic domains.
- Builds critical knowledge and skills in language arts, math, science, social studies, and more.
- Hundreds of hours of educational interaction and gameplay, with hundreds of additional hours to be added in the near future.
- Learners create avatars to explore an ever-expanding world, complete learning quests to unlock new zones, and interact with other learners.
- The same engaging experience across all platforms—smartphones, tablets, and computers—with the ability for up to three children in the same household to play simultaneously within the same parent account with individual profiles.
- Subscription-based service, fully COPPA compliant with no advertising or in-app purchases.
- Safe social elements that enable players to interact with other learners in-game, including filtered chat functionality. Parents control the level of interaction their children have with other learners through this filtered chat and can block all in-game communication if desired.
What You’ll Find While Playing
The grounds, The Commons, are absolutely beautiful. It looks so real as you manipulate your character along the grounds to embark on quests and challenges. You’ll hear birds chirping in passing, the waterfall falling, and run into other characters along the way that are also playing.
The Academy is where you’ll go first. It’s that grand building where you’ll find the classrooms and learning kiosks. The Library is really impressive and has an extensive range of books, lessons, and activities. At each Learning Kiosk, you’ll access all the lessons and activities which include videos, books, puzzles, and games in all subject areas.
Characters are to complete quests and challenges along the way. Some of the challenges were fun and silly, like riding a library ladder. Quests are a bit more in-depth. Characters will have an exclamation mark over their head if they are working on a quest.
Subject Areas:
- Language Arts (Reading-Fiction, Reading-General, Non-Fiction, & Spelling)
- Math (Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division, Place Value, Geometry, and more!)
- Science and Health (Habitats, Adaptations, Ecosystems & Food Webs, Weather, and more!)
- Social Studies (Culture, U.S. Geography, US History. World Geography, and more!)
The Places You Can Go
As you unlock more levels, more places are available for learning fun!
- The Market Place (level 3)- You can shop and sell items here
- The Pier- There’s a beach, boardwalk, AQUARIUM, carnival games, and shops too!
- The Neighborhood (level 6)- This is where you “live” and can decorate your own home (level 6)
- The Clubhouse- Join or create your own club!
What This 9-year-old loves:
- You can play with friends (Yes, my son loves this feature because if other kids are playing it, it has to be cool, right?!)
- You can customize your character/avatar
- Customize your player home
- Explore the Market Place to buy and sell items
- You can change the level from the beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels if the content is too challenging or too easy within each subject area (eases any frustration and builds confidence)
- Games- The games are engaging, interactive, and fun!
What this Teacher Mom loves:
- Choice- Choice is key to getting kids to learn. When kids have a choice in what or how they’re learning, they’re more likely to follow through.
- Differentiation- Since all kids think and learn in different ways, it’s important to offer a variety of learning options- books/reading, videos, and games. I also like having the option of changing the level to meet the needs of the learner.
- Variety of subject areas- Subject areas include language arts, math, science & health, and social studies. Within each subject area, there are specific subtopics to focus on. I like how in-depth the topics become.
- Leveling Up- You can’t level up without actually doing the activities. You can’t breeze through just to earn “coins.” You actually have to do the activities in order to earn coins to “purchase” items for your character.
- Game-based learning- This is the hook right here. Games hook kids in and kids love to play virtual games. Now the fact that this virtual game is educational and fun, well, that’s the complete package!
