Women are the strongest and most amazing beings, bringing life into this world and nurturing so many qualities that make us who we are today. Each and every year around Mother’s Day we celebrate women, mothers, and mother figures, who serve as role models and influence a child’s education in many different ways. I’ve had the opportunity and privilege of being a full time working “teacher mom” and work at home mom, which in my opinion are both very challenging full-time jobs. I realize the vital role that a mother plays in the before and after hours of school: feeding, bathing, playing, teaching, loving, and caring for all the basic needs of the child, as well as nurturing the curiosity and love for learning. Perhaps you’ve had a mother figure in your life who supported, encouraged, and inspired you. Maybe it was your mother, a friend, sister, aunt, or grandmother. Maybe it was a mentor, teacher, or leader who gave you that gentle push when you needed it or pointed you in the right direction. Or maybe you didn’t have one, like me, but are intrinsically motivated and passionate about education.
There are many amazing women who are constant advocates for education. Women who inspire young girls and women to dream big, to have a voice, and to make a difference. Women who support equality in education for a better and brighter future. Women whom we look up to. It is these women we celebrate as well.
Amazing Women Who Support Education
Michelle Obama, both a successful woman and mother, supports education and reminds everyone to never take it for granted. The former First Lady, along with her husband, former President Barack Obama, launched the Let Girls Learn organization in March 2015. The organization works with communities and leaders of third-world countries to promote girls’ education. In one of her interviews, she stated, “I plan to continue this work for the rest of my life, and I’m proud that my husband and I are creating a global adolescent girls’ education program through the Obama Foundation,” Obama said. “I want every girl on the planet to have the same kind of opportunities that I’ve had, and that my daughters are having, to fulfill their potential and pursue their dreams” (usatoday.com). She views education as a powerful tool, knowledge at the front and center that fuels opportunities. She is a role model to all females and empowers them to see the possibilities that education has to offer.
Malala Yousafzai, although not a mother, is a truly remarkable, brave young woman, and the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize winner. She survived an assassination attempt after speaking out for what she believed in, a safe and effective education for girls, and all children. She co-founded the Malala Fund to support education around the world. She believes in the power of voice in numbers and coming together to make a change. She stills speaks today and is an inspiration to young ladies around the globe.
Hillary Clinton and Julia Gillard launched the Collaborative for Harnessing Ambition and Resources for Girls Education (or Girls CHARGE) in 2014. The initiative includes 30 other partners, including governments like the United States and organizations from the private sector, committing $600 million to reach 14 million girls around the world.
CHARGE has five main goals:
-
Keep girls in school
-
Ensure school safety and security
-
Improve the quality of learning for girls
-
Support transitions from and out of school
-
Support girls’ education leaders/workers in developing countries to fulfill these goals
When women support and inspire other females to reach their fullest potential and greatness, the world changes. Girls become successful women and raise more successful women. So celebrate beautiful, strong and educated women in your life this Mother’s Day and every day who have loved and encouraged you to be the best you. Surround yourself with these positive beings who strive to make others better, including yourself! Let’s continue to acknowledge and pay tribute to the women who advocate for equal education and support women’s rights. You can read more about amazing women who are paving the way for strong, educated women here.
And to the mothers, mother figures, and special women who support, encourage, and inspire my students, we pay tribute with a Mother’s Day simile activity. Students incorporate the sweetest similes into their writing to extend meaning. We also write acrostic poems and combine the tribute and the poems to make a special card. It makes such a beautiful keepsake gift. You can check out the variety of templates for this Mother’s Day tribute here.
