Literature Circle Response Cards & Sticky Notes

Literature Circles or book clubs are my favorite ways to support and encourage reading, writing, and discussion among students as early as second grade. But sometimes the writing, or responding to the text, within each role was too much for them. It was an overwhelming task. I want students to love reading and discussing books. I want students to be able to focus on reading and responding in order to prepare for meaningful discussions.

These response cards serve as a reference tool with the defined role and ideas to prompt a written response. The sticky note provides just the right amount of space to write and respond in a non-intimidating way so students could read the assigned text, get right to respond, and discuss the text with their group members.

This is a low-prep, time-saving resource.

This resource includes:

• 9 Literature Circle Response Cards (Summarizer, Predictor, Discussion Director, Connector, Word Wizard, Illustrator, Passage Master, Character Captain, and a card with all the roles.
• 8 Sheets of Individual Sticky Note templates with each role
• Sticky Note Response Log (three-hole punch or put into a sheet protector and stored in a binder/three-prong folder for a quick assessment check.

Time-Saving Tips: Don’t want to print on sticky notes? Laminate the response cards and students can write on them with a thin dry-erase marker. This makes these cards easy to reuse. Put them on a binder ring for students to use and refer to in small groups. You can also just print each sticky note role on paper.
