Every teacher needs a Cricut for their classroom. The Cricut has been a teacher’s best friend for creating all you can think of and dream of for your classroom and home workspace. The creative possibilities are endless and teachers are customizing their classroom spaces and materials in all kinds of fun and different ways. You can make just about anything with it, like classroom decor, decal labels for your drawers, classroom door, walls, and signs. You can personalize all kinds of items from water bottles & mugs to teacher tees & totes. The sky is the limit and the creativity is endless.
What Exactly is a Cricut?
Just in case you have been living under a rock :), the Cricut is a cutting machine that can cut several different materials like paper, vinyl, and cardstock. Some Cricut machines can even cut thin wood, leather, fabric, and more. A Cricut inspires creativity for the classroom, the home, and all kinds of DIY projects. It is amazing what these machines can do.
Here are the 3 kinds of Cricut machines:
The Cricut Explore Air 2 – I have and use this machine. This machine is the most popular and best-selling Cricut machine because it can cut over 100 popular materials including faux leather, vinyl, cardstock, and fabric. It’s fairly large in size and can cut anything wider than 4.25 inches, up to 12 inches.
*The first model, The Cricut Explore Air, does not have the fast mode or the embedded Bluetooth for wireless cutting like Cricut Explore Air 2 does. Otherwise, the machines are pretty similar as far as the build and what they can do.
All the machine colors are beautiful but check out the NEW Explore Air 2 in gold.
The Cricut Maker looks just like the Cricut Explore Air 2 but it has more tools and more possibilities for creativity and “making.” It can cut over 300 materials like leather and basswood. It’s pretty amazing! This machine may be more ideal for the sewer, quilter, or someone who likes to make 3D projects and models.
The Cricut Joy– This little cutie is the newest machine in the Cricut family and is a small, simple machine that is great for getting started with creativity. This machine is great for small spaces and might just be what you need in your classroom. It cuts over 50 materials like copy paper and construction paper.
Let’s Get Making!
Vinyl is the best way to get started because it is easy to cut and there are so many things you can make. I began with customizing my home teaching office & crafting space with some large vinyl wall decals.
Vinyl decals for the classroom door.
Here are other ways to have some fun with vinyl in the classroom from awesome teachers.
Rebekah at missjollysjourney is a texas educator with 12 years of teaching experience who knows how to spice up this trending rolling cart with customized vinyl decals for organizing each tier. I love the font style and color which pairs perfectly with that green.
McKenzie, j.mckenzieself, is an educator in Arkansas. I love how she used the Cricut to label these bins for her small groups. Organization and labeling are so important in any classroom!
Miss Z, the PlantyTeacher, a 3rd-grade teacher in Canada, put vinyl lettering on these tap lights as an effective classroom management strategy to control the chit chat and volume of students. This is a game-changer in any classroom and the kids LOVE these little lights.
LaKeta at thepolkadotdesk is a fifth grade teacher who uses vinyl to set up the agenda area of her whiteboard. I love this idea!
Let’s Get Cutting!
Say goodbye to those old cutting shears! Your hands will be tired and sore no more. So many teachers use the Cricut’s cutting ability to cut letters and shapes for amazing bulletin board and door displays. Here are a few examples for inspiration!
Lori at Kinder Lake is a 2nd-grade teacher and lives by the lake. She created this Ship Shape Work nautical classroom decor and bulletin board display. She used her Cricut to cut those cute, little numbered sailboats.
Heather at heatherraemeow is an educator and Cricut crafter. She says that her Cricut has been the best for making bulletin boards.
Ashley, at cricutcrafts_by_ash, is a Cricut crafter and a Pre-k teacher. She cut out these seahorse-shaped cubby tags with her Cricut. It looks like her pre-k students had lots of fun painting these afterward. Didn’t they turn out super cute?! Check out all of Ashley’s Cricut creations for more inspiration.
Let’s Make Teacher Tees
Who doesn’t love teacher tees?! I can’t get enough of them. The Cricut EasyPress is for your heat transfer projects. This machine comes in 4 sizes and transfers heat like a boss. Even if you own an iron, it will not transfer heat evenly and professionally as this machine does. It is literally so “easy” to use and its settings for temperature and timing make it foolproof. My first tee involved heat pressing a premade Cricut design right onto a blank tee. Easy peasy!
This next teacher tee got a little fancier. I used the Cricut Design Space to create the text and then put the Cricut to work cutting through heat transfer vinyl, glittery vinyl.
A little glitter and sparkle make everything better!
Take a look at this teacher tee, made by Sarah a first-grade teacher at donutsthenteach. All of her student’s names are on this tee for field day and for the last day of school. AMAZING!!!
Mrs. Bahrt at bahrts_bunch teaches 5th grade in Indiana. She made this tee with her Cricut for the 100th day of school. I love the design!
Grace, at gracealotto, a teacher and a new boxer parent, made this t-shirt with a dash of sparkle. I love the fonts and different colors and types of vinyl (and who doesn’t love a little bit or lots of sparkles?!).
If teacher tees aren’t your thing, you can use the heat press on hats, totes, sneakers, and so much more!
Megan at missps_style, Literacy Specialist, uses the Cricut Joy to spruce up her mouse pad. It only took 8 minutes to complete this project. You will love this little compact maker.
Other things you may be interested in making…Faux leather EARRINGS for yourself and your teacher besties! I have made so many pairs for my teacher friends and they LOVE them.
So now I ask, do you need a Cricut for your classroom? Yes, YOU DO! I know that you will love it. Get in touch with your crafty side and get creating. Share with me what you can’t wait to create or have created for your classroom in the comments below.
When I purchased my Cricut, I began with the starter kit. It includes a ton for you to try out to make mistakes and find what you love to make. Remember the sky is the limit!
